Major League Soccer is joining the effort to kick the spread of influenza this winter.

The league is partnering with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) to raise awareness aimed at North American soccer fans. The effort includes messages during all nationally broadcasted games between October and December to remind people to get their annual flu vaccine and to be educated on flu prevention.

The NFID Flu Bugs, mascots for the foundation, will give away free copies of the "Are You a Flu Fighter?" coloring book and other educational items at the Ban Fest on Saturday at the home match between DC United and Chicago Fire at the RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

There is also a public service announcement featuring Freddie the Flu Detective planned for the 2014 MLS Cup on Dec. 7, officials said.
