The Centre for Infections in Colindale, London, has announced a symposium on scientific issues in immunization to be held May 12.

The day-long event will include presentations on topical areas in vaccine policy, vaccine development and vaccine-preventable disease epidemiology and feature presentations that focus on current issues, future strategies and the progress being made with potential new vaccines.

Among the presentations slated for the symposium is "Pandemic Flu Vaccines: Lessons Learned," presented by Katja Hoschler, and "TB Epidemiology: Impact of the Selective BCG Program," presented by Surinder Tamne. Additionally, Mich Erlewyn-Lajeunesse will present a speech entitled "Anaphylaxis & Allergic Reactions to Vaccines" at the symposium.

The goal of the Centre for Infections is surveillance of infectious disease and to provide specialist and reference microbiology and microbial epidemiology.

The Centre for Infections also coordinates the investigation and cause of national and uncommon outbreaks and aids in advising the government on the risks posed by various infections. The Centre is also charged with responding to international health alerts.

A number of courses in microbiology and on the epidemiology and surveillance of infectious diseases are presented by the Centre for Infections throughout the year.

The Centre’s Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team also runs an extensive portfolio of courses for biosafety training and pathogen identification for internal customers.
